Juicy, lively and punchy, this immediately appealing sauvignon shows fragrant aromas of passionfruit, lime zest and peach. The palate is concentrated and focused with succulent mouthfeel, finishing long and zesty. At its best: now to 2017. Aug 2014. 91/100 pts, 4.5*

Raymond Chan Wine Review Supper Club Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

The ‘Supper Club’ brand of Christchurch wine distributor Alastair Picton-Warlow has taken a life of its own. Designed to be an everyday and affordable label that harks back to the frivolous and fun times of the Supper Clubs in London during the late 1940s, the wine suits these modern times. It is growing in the New Zealand market and has been exported. Alastair has the assistance of Nick Entwistle and Sam Rose with the Marlborough wines and Dean Shaw for the Central Otago wine. I’ve seen the Sauvignon Blanc wine steadily progressing in balance and flavour expression since the 2011 vintage release. Here is my review of the new 2014 release.

Supper Club Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014 ****

Bright, very pale straw colour with slight green hues, near colourless on rim. The nose is very fresh, tightly held with penetrating aromas of pungent passionfruit along with chalky, minerally notes, and grassy, nettly and esters-lifted nuances. This is pure and mouthwatering. Dry to taste and slender in expression, attractively aromatic and pungent passionfruit flavours show alongside nettles, grassy notes and gooseberry fruit, forming a good core with depth and linearity. Light phenolic textures lend a soft, graininess with restrained acidity enhancing the rounded mouthfeel. The flavours carry through to a long, dry finish with passionfruit notes. This is an elegant, intense, passionfruity Sauvignon Blanc with soft grainy textures. Serve with seafood and poultry dishes over the next 2 years. Fruit from Dillons Point and 20 y.o. vines on Rapaura Road, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. 17.5-/20 Aug 2014

Joelle Thompson Review

This wine has a fun name and a fun approach, both of which are supported by its incredibly zesty fresh style. It has intense flavours of citrus - lemon, grapefruit and lime zest – as well as red fleshy apples and peach juice. Its intense acidity and light body are well balanced by its firm, lightly grippy finish. This adds substance and weight to this youthful Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which is from the largest vintage ever in New Zealand’s wine history; 2014. 4 stars out of 5

Marlborough Vintage Report 2014

A cooler than normal summer was followed by a warm dry autumn, helping produce fruit of excellent concentration and elegance. With a slow start to harvest at the end of March, the dry autumn weather ensured another condensed vintage, with all grapes harvested by the second week of April. Once again the ability to harvest without interruption ensured all fruit was picked prior to an extended period of heavy rain towards the end of April. The white wines are characterised by concentrated tropical and citrus aromatics and bright vibrant acidity, while the red wines display rich complex fruit concentration and refined texture.

Winemakers Notes

Marlborough is renowned for its high sunshine hours and cool night time temperatures that help lock in the zesty flavours, giving crisp and fruity structure to the wines. The 2014 vintage reflects this perfectly. Striking notes of nettles, pink grape-fruit and fresh currants leap from the glass. The crisply defined palate is underlined with minerality, lingering with guava and ripe pear. This wine is especially perfectly matched with freshly shucked oysters, lightly pan-fried fish, a green leaf goats cheese salad or simply enjoy as an aperitif.
